Fairmont Works to Turn “Brain Drain” into Brain Gain

It’s often a story small cities face, with the younger population going to college, never to return to their hometown.

Fairmont Chamber of Commerce President Margaret Dillard says, “Our narrative is that our towns are dying and rural America is not doing well.”

But Fairmont and Martin County are working to change that narrative, to make sure the so-called “brain drain” is not part of their story.

Dillard says, “We educate our children up through high school and we send them away to get further education. And brain gain is encouraging them to move back.”
